Switchfoot Set To Rock Manila

Switchfoot is finally coming to Manila -- for a benefit concert for the International Justice Mission -- September 10th, 2007 at 7:30 pm at the Cuneta Astrodome.    The San Diego-based alternative rock band (including Filipino keyboardist/guitarist/vocalist Jerome Fontamillas) is best known for some of their movie and television soundtrack hits such as Only Hope from the film A Walk to Remember.

The San Diego-based band often combines a spiritual bent with a critique of some of modern society's hypocrisies on songs like the Top 5 singles "Dare You to Move" and "Meant to Live" as well as such tracks as "Politicians" and "Happy is a Yuppie Word" from their 2005 album Nothing is Sound.  Singer/songwriter/guitarist/band leader Jon Foreman says, "We've always used music as a vehicle to explore our own questions and frustrations." As their song lyrics prove, they resolve their questions through faith.   Foreman testifies: "Faith is only possible when humility and wonder is possible."  They see  "the musical world of humility and wonder (as a wide open) door to ... explore (life and faith)."

Mountaintop productions headed by Reeya Lucero invited the group to Manila. Reeya recalls that as she became a volunteer prayer partner for the International Justice Mission (IJM) she felt impressed to do more about her calling to help IJM reach out to the children bound by poverty, child labor, and injustice. As Reeya considered how she could do more to help IJM, she initially thought of being a clerk or secretary, but the idea of organizing benefit concerts (such as this Switchfoot concert) emerged as a very practical way for her to be a full-time supporter of IJM.  

IJM is a non-profit organization that documents and monitors conditions of abuse and oppression, educates the public about the abuses, and mobilizes intervention on behalf of the victims. The IJM Manila office provides free legal, investigative, and social work assistance to abused or exploited children in the National Capital Region. Proceeds of the concert will help fund the legal and educational assistance provided to more than 100 children assisted by IJM.

Volunteer organizations and street teams met last Thursday, July 19, 2007 at Ortigas Center to have an orientation about IJM and the logistics for the said event.
