Program Notes or Transcript

What’s the most important instruction for parents to remember in raising their kids?  I’ll give you a hint.  It’s more than just an instruction…it’s a commandment!  Hi, this is Doug Flemming, and we’ll be talking about the greatest parental commandment today, on this edition of Take Five, five minutes of inspiration, all brought to you by the Church of the Nazarene.  There are thousands of books and tapes on parenting.  There are millions of psychologists and sociologists who offer their latest advice on how to parent.  Yet for all these materials available to us, it seems that parents are NOT doing a better job of raising kids.  In fact, in many nations, families are crumbling and children are left to parent themselves.  Well let me suggest a book to you called, Faith Training, by Joe White.  I recommend it because the author is constantly referring us back to the real source of knowledge, God’s Word.  Joe White says that a faith trainer is committed to sharing God’s word.  Without a doubt, the single most important command in Scripture is Deutoronomy 6:5-9.   It clearly spells out our priorities for all of us busy parents.  “Love GOD, your God, with your whole heart: love him with all that's in you, love him with all you've got! Write these commandments that I've given you today on your hearts. Get them inside of you and then get them inside your children. Talk about them wherever you are, sitting at home or walking in the street; talk about them from the time you get up in the morning to when you fall into bed at night.”  If you want to be a successful parent…if you want your kids to succeed, then teach them the Word of God.

Today’s Music: Word of God Speak, MercyMe

I challenge you to begin today a routine of sharing God’s word with your kids.  Start small. At one of your meals together, begin by reading a passage of Scripture, discuss how it applies to your lives, then pray together.  If you’re already having a time of family devotions, then I challenge you further to begin memorizing Scripture together everyday…one verse a day.  You’ll be amazed at the results, as you and your kids begin to hide God’s word in your hearts. Remember it’s never too late to become a faith trainer. Start today!
