The real super heroes are people who overcome incredible physical obstacles to function and succeed in daily life!
Program Notes or Transcript
Hollywood has recently released a whole slew of action films about super heroes Spider Man, Fantastic Four, Transformers. But these characters don’t compare to the real life heroes who overcome incredible physical obstacles just to survive. Hi this is Doug Flemming exalting the real heroes today on Take Five. Send me your stories about real life heroes in your community. Email to radio@wmc-ap.org. Take Five is a broadcast of WM Communications, Asia-Pacific. Like many kids, my children like super hero films. And sometimes those movies do have positive messages. However, I make sure my children get a good dose of reality when it comes to heroism. Of course there is no Spiderman, Batman, or Superman. But in real life there are people who make heroic efforts to overcome disabilities just to survive AND to succeed. I’ll be back after a quick tune to feature three such heroes.
MUSIC: Heroes, Gaithers
Music of real heroes, on Take Five. A few months ago on Take Five, I featured the story of Team Hoyt, the father and son ironman team of Dick and Rick Hoyt. They compete in ironman events all over the world, beating other contestants, in spite of the fact that father Dick pulls, pushes and carries his adult son, Rick, then entire way. Incredible story. More recently I’ve read a book about Tom Brewster called, “Only Paralyzed from the Neck Down.” Tom was paralyzed in a diving accident at the age of 18, but from his wheelchair became one of the world's foremost missionary strategists. Along with his wife, and son, they traveled to some of the remotest parts of the world, writing, teaching, challenging, and inspiring thousands. And then just today, a friend sent me a Youtube link about “The Amazing Armless Woman.” This petite housewife and mother in rural China, who was born without arms, is able to do everything (catch seafood, cook, eat, clean house) using only her feet! Wow! These three people, and the many more like them are the real heroes. So next time you are feeling sorry for yourself, needing some inspiration, consider the real life super heroes all around you. Then take courage and utilize all the resources, strengths, even weaknesses and shortcomings, to glorify God by gratefully serving others around you.Doug Flemming - Doug has been the Regional Communications Coordinator for WM Communications, Asia-Pacific since 1993.
