Who are the role models shaping your kids?  You might be shocked to learn who our children look up to? Hi this is Doug Flemming your concerned companion for the next five minutes on Take Five, a production from the Church of the Nazarene.  A reporter was asking kids who their heroes were and what they wanted to be when they grow up.  Many of the kid’s responses were frightening.  Especially one little girl who said: “I want to be a sex bomb dancer!” Scary isn’t it? I’m wondering where that little girl’s parents are?  Sadly, the parents are probably there in the home watching and enjoying the sex bomb dancers along with their kids, even encouraging their little girls to mimic the same explicit routines.  Parents, the fact is, YOU are the main role models shaping the next generation.  Our children are constantly watching us, listening, and copying us.  The way we talk, our attitudes, our actions all profoundly affect our kids. I heard a story about a mother who had no arms, so she had to feed her baby with her feet. And as the child grew, he began to also use his feet to hold his bottle, even though he had two healthy arms. Right now there are many adults living as though they were crippled, and sadly are passing those handicaps on to the next generation.  Friend if you want the next generation, your kids, to live healthy lives of integrity, respect and love then you must model those things in your home.  For the next three episodes of Take Five I’ll be giving tips on how you can become the godly role model that your children need to see.

Yes, young people are looking for heroes, for role models.  And God has given that task mainly to us parents. Join me for the next three editions of Take Five as we look at ways to become good role models.

One way to start is to go look in the mirror and honestly ask yourself if you are being the kind of model your kids can look up to. And if not, confess your faults, and determine to make a change. And that act of humility alone is the best way to start being a hero at home.
