Program Notes or Transcript

When’s the last time you climbed a mountain?  Well, if you’re in the mood for a good hike, join me today as we “trek the trail of life” on Take Five.  Take Five is a production of the Church of the Nazarene and this station.  A friend of mine invited me to go trekking with him in Tibet. I couldn’t go, but just thinking about it brought back memories of my backpacking trips.  I’ve had the privilege of hiking Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the Continental US. I’ve gone rim-to-rim in the Grand Canyon.  And I’ve enjoyed hills, dunes and mountains from Papua New Guinea to the Philippines.  And everywhere I’ve hiked I notice that backpackers are big-hearted people. Sure they like their space, but in time of need they'll be there for you. The very choice they make to go hiking indicates an inward desire to experience God’s creation, to get close to him…yet they remain sensitive to the needs of their traveling companions and their surroundings. The trail often brings out the best in people and there are some valuable lessons from backpacking that can apply to our daily lives. (Mark Cooper)  Hike Your Own Hike - we are each unique individuals, created in God’s image to accomplish His plans for our lives. So we need to respect each other’s differences, and encourage one another to follow the trail marked out for us. Leave No Trace - If you enjoy the trails, don’t leave your trash behind.  It will ruin the experience for future travelers. Clean up after yourself. Restore rather than deplete. Try to make the places and people you touch in your life better for having met you. More tips from the trail after this tune from Take Five.

I think the writer of the Psalms must have been a hiker.   Many times  David talks about God’s creation, the mountains, hills and forests.  He often refers to life as a path.  In Psalm 16:11, David writes, “You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” Friend there are many pleasures in God’s creation just waiting for you to discover.  In fact, every day can be an adventure along the trail of life.  Seek God’s direction, follow in the way He leads you, and along the way leave your world a better place than you find it. More tips from the trail, tomorrow on Take Five.
