Program Notes or Transcript

Are you stressed about something?  Perhaps you feel like your facing your problem all alone?  Well, then strap on your backpack and join me as we “trek the trails of life” today on Take Five.  Take Five is brought to you by the Church of the Nazarene and this station. I have learned from my backpacking experiences some valuable lessons for life. On one of my adventures I made it to camp earlier than the rest of my group and decided to do some extra exploration by myself.  I wanted to climb a higher peak and collect some snow.  When I reached the top I realized the way down was much more difficult, and at one point a huge boulder gave way under my feet and I had to jump out away from the rock to prevent it from crushing me.  In the process I fell about 6 meters, injuring my leg.  My lone adventure was not worth the agony.  And that’s a lesson we can apply to daily living. Though we are each unique individuals, with unique assignments from God, we still need each other.  I should not have climbed that peak by myself.  With a companion we could have worked together to get down safely. And God has always desired to have a people who will follow Him together, helping one another along the trail of life.  Micah 4:2  “Many nations will come and say, Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD.  He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths.”

Today’s Music: Sheltering Tree, NewSong

Backpacker and author Mark Cooper makes a similar observation  about companionship.  He says at the end of the day, it’s important to “Gather ‘Round the Fire.” The campfire is the place to gather with your traveling companions after a hard day’s hike. The fire warms the body and the laughter and conversation warms the soul. In our busy lives we need to put the stress of the day behind us and relax with those around us, especially our families.  If you let yourself be consumed by the concerns of life or if you try to go it alone, you will find yourself on shaky ground.  Seek the support and fellowship of your family and friends.  Friend, you need the people around you for help, love and support, and they need you.
